my heart is open (ft. New Snake Commune)

about

I had some lyrics I had written for another song by another artist, and it seemed like they weren't going to be used, and they just happened to work for this kind of atmospheric instrumental I created, so I put them here. At the time, I was living in community with Joey (New Snake Commune) IRL, and we enjoyed playing music together. They agreed to collaborate on this track with me, and it's all the better for their contributions. The song is about finding strength in your vulnerability, and not letting the chance you will be harmed deprive you of the joy that comes with that vulnerability.

If you like mine and Joey's work together here, check out our EP we released last year as Worm Blood Moon Flower:

lyrics

[Verse 1: Wren Dove Lark]

I will salvage this heart
I'll stitch together all these vessels torn apart
Make a patchwork of myself and then restart
Find beauty in these scars

And
I will find strength outside you
I'll want for more than all these walls that still confine you
I'll find my own way
I will transcend every hurtful thing you say

[Prechorus: Wren Dove Lark]

And I may fail
But I will grow
And I will learn
And I will know

A form of care you never had for me
And never wanted me to see

And I'll get angry
I may cry
I'll find my closure
Stop asking why

I will remember what you did to me
But I won't hold it anymore
I will release

[Chorus: Wren Dove Lark]

'Cause my heart is open
Yeah my heart is open
To butterflies and doves
To miracles and rainbows
To blessings from above
To vitriol and death blows
That find their way inside
'Til pain intensifies
But it hurts much more to hide
So my heart is open
Yeah my heart is open
And there's nothing more divine
Than reclaiming what is mine from you

[Verse 2: Wren Dove Lark]

So
I will stop pressing replay
I'll give these memories a restful place to stay
I will accept that things will never be the same
But I won't be ashamed

And
I'll find a pocket of air
I'll place my heart back on my sleeve I proudly wear
I will slowly breathe in
Relax my muscles and remind myself again

[Prechorus: Wren Dove Lark]

And I may fail
But I will grow
And I will learn
And I will know

A form of care you never had for me
And never wanted me to see

And I'll get angry
I may cry
I'll find my closure
Stop asking why

I will remember what you did to me
But I won't hold it anymore
I will release

[Chorus: Wren Dove Lark]

'Cause my heart is open
Yeah my heart is open
To butterflies and doves
To miracles and rainbows
To blessings from above
To vitriol and death blows
That find their way inside
'Til pain intensifies
But it hurts much more to hide
So my heart is open
Yeah my heart is open
And there's nothing more divine
Than reclaiming what is mine from you

[Outro: New Snake Commune]

My one hope for you
(Wren: My one hope for you x2)
Is that I never even cross your mind
'Cause my heart was broken
The same way you left the old screen door

But it's fixed now
And I'm fine now
We're both still just a little off-center

But every fiber torn
Is twice reformed
And I'll stretch these knotty muscles out
Keep breathing
Lose myself between the up and down

And rise to meet the sun
Same light in everyone
