about

This song started off as a potential collaboration between The Answers in Between and I, with me just recording a vocal melody for lyrics she had written to an instrumental that I had just made, and then I built a whole song around it. She only understandably had time for one vocal collaboration that comes later in the album, so she let me keep those lyrics for this song. It's about how heavy it feels to bear the emotional weight some people place on me. People see me as a trans person and think I contain a lot of wisdom and advice, and that part of me that wants to help can sometimes be led into really uncomfortable situations where I've felt emotionally manipulated by or made to feel responsible for other people's emotions. This is me telling myself I'm not living others' lives anymore. I'm living my own.

lyrics

[Verse 1]

You want a piece of my mind
I'm gonna give it to you
You won't find any peace in mine
So I'm gonna tell you the truth

I decline

To feel this need to be fused
Addiction to being used
I've never let my body and my mind just be mine
But I could start to try
So I decline

I see myself clearer now
I don't think that I should ever
Think I can teach someone else
How to treat themselves better

You'll be fine if I decline

[Chorus]

To carry that weight for you
Not gonna carry that weight for you
I don't know what else I can say to you
My vocal cords feel like a flash flood crashing into you

Saying I'm sorry I can't do this no more
I've got a light I try my hardest to keep moving towards
I've got too much I want to live for
Than wasting all my time on a life that's never been mine

It's always been yours
It's always been yours
It's always been yours
It's always been yours

[Verse 2]

And I am not an oracle
And I cannot predict your future
And I cannot heal you on my own
Without tearing my sutures

I cannot field your questions
If you're gonna speak out of turn
I cannot hold your hand along the way
If you don't do the work

You only like me when you're pushing me up against a wall
You only see me as a cushion that can break your fall
But your insecurity
That you project on me
Is not my problem to solve

[Chorus]

Not carry that weight for you
Not gonna carry that weight for you
I don't know what else I can say to you
My vocal cords feel like a flash flood crashing into you

Saying I'm sorry I can't do this no more
I've got a light I try my hardest to keep moving towards
I've got too much I want to live for
Than wasting all my time on a life that's never been mine

It's always been yours
It's always been yours
It's always been yours
It's always been yours
